Jennifer Austin is an Associate Professor in Classical and Modern Languages and Literature at Rutgers-Newark. Her research interests center around bilingualism, language contact and language acquisition. Currently, she is collaborating on a longitudinal study of the development of syntax in Spanish-speaking children who are learning English as a second language in preschool. The purpose of the project is to understand better why the grammars of monolingual and bilingual children develop differently, as well as to assess how early language instruction affects school readiness in young children from immigrant families.
